OUTLINE SYLLABUS MODULES:
Paper One: Documents and Debates:
One topic module, thirty hours’ teaching;
Assessment: one structured source-based question, approx. 1,500 words each. 25% of final assessment.
Paper Two: Narrative Studies:
Two theme choices, fifteen hours each, chosen from;
Industry and Empire; The United Kingdom and the World, 1837-1914
Cradles and Crucibles: The Making of the USA, 1843-1917
The USA and Modern Warfare, 1917-1992
Assessment: two essays, approx. 1,500 words each, 1 on each chosen module. 25% of final assessment.
Paper Three: Studies in Depth:
Two case studies, fifteen hours each;
Aspects of Culture, Politics and Society in Britain, 1942-2012
Aspects of Culture, Politics and Society in the USA, 1942-2012
Assessment: two essays, approx. 1,500 words each, 1 on each module. 25% of final assessment.
Paper Four: Individual Investigation:
One personal study, ten hours’ personal supervision.
An extended piece of coursework, combining the skills of chronicling, interpreting and narrating historical events and sources, based on modules chosen for papers two and three (covering a period of at least forty years, or twenty years if involving the study of two or more countries in comparison), the subject for investigation and the set question to be agreed with the tutor; approx. 2,000 words plus footnotes, appendices and Bibliography. 25% of final assessment.
